Microsoft confirms it was hacked after releasing 37GB of sensitive data

Microsoft was hacked by a gang of hackers. After stealing data from Nvidia and Samsung, the group of hackers managed to gain access to Microsoft’s servers.

The attackers left with 37GB of sensitive data, including source code from Bing or Cortana. 

The company, however, claims that no user was affected by the attack and that its teams managed to cut short the data extortion.

1. Microsoft hacked: the words of the company

At first, the Redmond firms seeks to reassure. In the long post, published on its official website, it assures that “no customer code or data was involved in the observed activities” and that the hack is not large enough to cause harms to users.

It also explains that only one company account was infiltrated, giving the hackers access to confidential data.

Furthermore, the publication of these documents allowed Windows “to intervene and interrumpt the actor in the middle of the operation, thus limiting a broader impact.”

LAPSUS, the group of hackers, did not ask for a ransom, as it was able to do for Nvidia.  

Microsoft, about the attack, sees it as the action of a group “motivated by theft and destruction.”

• LAPSUS: the new threat for the large companies

By gaining access to the Azure server, the LAPSUS hacker group claims to have gotten its hands on the source code for Bing, the voice assistant Cortana and other projects developed by the company’s teams. 

In recent weeks, LAPSUS has already taken on several tech giants. In early March, 2022, the group of hackers managed to penetrate Nvidia’s servers to steal confidential documents.

In exchange for its silence, the gang demanded an end to all limitations that prevent mining cryptocurrencies with graphics cards.

Soon after, the group stole 190 GB of data from Samsung servers.

During the Microsoft hack, LAPSUS seized 37 GB of confidential data belonging to Microsoft. 

This time, the group did not demand a ransom from the company. This Monday, March 21, 2022, LAPSUS published all the data stolen during the attack on the web.

Shared on the gang’s Telegram conversion, the torrent file contains informations on 250 Microsoft signed projects.

According to the hackers, the file contains 100% source code for Bing and around 45% source code for Bing Maps (alternative to Google Maps) and Cortana. 

It also contains the code for web infrastructures, websites and mobile applications.

Ciò metterà YouTube direttamente in concorrenza con altri servizi di streaming, come ad esempio Peacock, Roku Channel, Tubi e tanti altri.

YouTube, attraverso il suo nuovo servizio di streaming gratuito, offrirà circa 4000 episodi TV oltre ai 1500 film già disponibili. 

Con le sue nuove offerte televisive, YouTube spera, come già avviene per Netflix, di mantenere gli utenti attaccati alla sua piattaforma. 

Avere dozzine di episodi gratuiti in più dei loro programmi televisivi preferiti consentirà agli utenti di abbuffarsi come fanno già su altre piattaforme, anche se la maggior parte dei contenuti offerti non è quella che chiamereste TV di prestigio.

Uno dei suoi maggiori rivali al riguardo è Roku TV, che ha avuto una disputa molto pubblica con YouTube che, tra l’altro, si è risolta soltanto di recente.

1. I tentativi della piattaforma di rimanere al passo con i tempi

Fino al 2021, YouTube aveva cercato di colmare le lacune dei suoi contenuti proponendo una propria programmazione tramite YouTube Originals.

All’inizio del 2022, tuttavia, ha annunciato che avrebbe in gran parte abbandonato queste ambizioni e si sarebbe concentrato rigorosamente sui suoi Black Voices e YouTube Kids Funds.

YouTube Originals aveva riscosso un certo successo con programmi come Cobra Kai, ma non ha mai rappresentato una grande minaccia per i servizi di streaming più importanti, come Netflix, Amazon Prime e Disney Plus.

Rimane quindi da vedere se, grazie a questa nuova idea, ovvero lo streaming gratuito, YouTube riesca a recuperare il terreno che ha perso o se, come nel caso di YouTube Originals, si rivelerà un altro flop.

YouTube, a oggi, è stata l’ultima compagnia a lanciarsi nel mercato dello streaming e a offrire programmi TV gratuiti con annunci. 

Tuttavia, il gigante dei video intende riguadagnare il terreno che ha perso finora: in un comunicato stampa, rilasciato di recente sui suoi media, YouTube ha dichiarato di avere l’intenzione di aggiungere fino a 100 spettacoli e film ogni settimana.

Una vera e propria sfida nei confronti di Netflix and company, che anche nei periodi più ricchi di novità, come ad esempio il periodo natalizio, non arrivano a raggiungere questi traguardi così ambiziosi.
